Avis is a great option for international car rental, but it's not as rewarding as others.

Our Verdict

Avis is a well-known car rental company that offers affordable pricing and a wide range of locations in the US as well as around the globe. Avis could be a bit more generous with its rewards program, but it's a great choice if you need to rent a car abroad.

  1. Weekly rates competitive
  2. There are many locations

Rewards programs are less generous than other programs

Avis claims to be one of the top car rental websites, based on a history that dates back to 1946. Avis was the first company to rent cars at airport locations. It has an extensive global network of approximately 5,500 locations across more than 165 countries.

Avis: Rent options

Avis has over 1,900 locations across the US, including the airports and the neighborhood locations. This makes Avis a strong contender among car rental giants. Avis's 5,500+ locations in America and 165 countries around the world make it a top choice for travelers who travel further afield. If you arrive at one of these major airports, you will almost certainly see an Avis desk.

Renters have a wide range of options when it comes to vehicle selection. You can find almost any type of vehicle, from economy and compact cars to premium and luxurious vehicles to vans and SUVs. If you are looking to make an impression, sportier models may be an option. Hybrids might also be available if that is your preference.

Pricing for Avis

Avis was rated as average for one-day rentals and slightly higher than the norm for weekly rates in our evaluation. A one-day economy rental costs around $95 while a seven-day rental is around $245.

It's best to avoid airport Avis locations to keep costs down. Airports have additional taxes and fees. Avis will pick you up at your hotel or home and transport you to the office to complete paperwork if you make your reservation in advance.

Avis Review: The Rewards Program

Avis Preferred, its rewards program, is completely free to join. One point is earned for every dollar spent. Avis Preferred has one drawback. It takes 700 points to get a free rental. This is a lot more than other car rental companies. You do get 100 points just for signing up. Bonus points can be earned for renting accessories. There are no blackout dates.

Avis Preferred Plus is an additional tier in the rewards program. You can move up to this tier after you have made 12 rental payments or spent $5,000. This level earns 1.25 points per $1. Earn 1.5 points per $1 if you rent 25 properties or spend $7,000 on rentals. You'll be eligible to receive complimentary upgrades if you are a Preferred Plus member. You'll also get many standard benefits such as expedited checkout, which allows you to go directly to your car and finish the rental right there.

Avis car-rental service is recommended

Avis has thousands of locations all over the globe, so it will be a good choice for international travelers. It also has plenty to offer those who are just looking to rent a car in the US. The prices are comparable to what you would expect for a car rental service. However, the rewards program may not be as rewarding as others.
